In addition to your nails, it is important to take care of the skin on your hands and fingers. The first thing to avoid is nibbling and pinching the nails or cuticles as this is the easiest way to get hangnails, cracks and periungual peeling. If, in addition, we follow the three steps mentioned in the previous post previous post of nail care, we will not have these problems. We remember it applied to the hands:
- Avoid exposure to irritants: hot water, soaps, detergents, some foods… It is recommended to use cotton gloves whenever possible under latex or vinyl gloves.
- Hygiene: it is very important but should be done with mild products without soaps or detergents and never wash hands more than 4-5 times a day. This will prevent skin irritation.
- Moisturizing: it is best to apply almond oil or similar on the skin with a light massage. Once a day is enough to keep hands moisturized, as long as we comply with the two previous points.
If hangnails and skin tags have already appeared, the most important thing is to apply cosmetic products with a barrier effect to the hands and nails to prevent the prolongation of these lesions over time. A very simple solution is to cover the nails with a “second skin” style dressing over the nail and the distal part of the finger to prevent the “chronic aggressions” that we sometimes make on our nails and the skin around them.
